From writing the Virginia Declaration of Rights that made its way into the most powerful words of the Declaration of Independence, to his opposition to the Constitution because it created too centralized a government, to his insistence on a Bill of Rights to guarantee basic freedoms, to mentoring his neighbor George Washington, to introducing the idea of abuse of power to the impeachment clause, George Mason is a man for all time. I visited his home, Gunston Hall, this weekend to pay him homage.
